david beckham.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mls/news?slug=ro-beckham080607&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

firstly, i live in toronto and am part of the soccer community here, playing the game three times a week on two different teams. i know of few people who have even mentioned david beckham playing here this week-end and while the game was on we were actually playing ourselves.

secondly, david beckham wasn`t hired to play the game. he was hired to sell shirts and attract attention to the game, which has struggled to gain popularity in america since the aborted first attempt to promote it 27 years ago with the nasl. whether he plays or not he will still be earning his fees.

while beckham was with real madrid he sold over $300 million worth of merchandise with his name on it. a big number that has been fact checked.

if he does similar numbers here everyone will be watching soccer.

we are consumers and we consume what we are told to consume.

even if we dislike, or even hate soccer.

proof?

you know who he is.

Have to give him credit - there are many ppl who can play footie there are many who can sell merchandise there are few who can both. And none who can do it as well as him.

I've played the sport as a teenager, and enjoyed it greatly. I never liked watching it, though.

I say different strokes for different folks. Still, I don't think Mr. Beckham is going to stoke my interest any more than Pele did.

no, i believe you when you say that x.....

what will happen is that the media will bombard you with many more images of beckham and his wife and the effect is that it will shape your buying habits of things like, l.a. galaxy clothing, cologne, more media about bavid beckham or his wife and so on.......if that`s your nature to begin with.

pele didn`t have the multi-media power of becks......

the very fact that we are exchanging electrons in this way proves the thesis.

well, michael owen tried a season over there and he was arguably the best striker of a generation. the "galactico" system is one that chelsea are trying with some success in england and others are following suit.

beckham was a footballing star in england well before he went to spain and doesn`t owe the footballing community anything. his credentials speak for themselves.

football is a game of survival. on the field, and increasingly off the field too.

you can be in top shape, training, diet and fitness, but one twist of an ankle or hamstring niggle and you are set back months.

i play the game 3 times a week, winter and summer and there are mornings where i wonder if i`m going to be able to walk, never mind run flat out for 90 minutes......

but i haven`t missed more than a couple of weeks due to injury in ten years even though i broke my ankle in 3 places this time last year.

beckham has had a severe ankle injury that goes back to a friendly game against brazil in the spring where he was deliberately caught by a late tackle. he`s nowhere near match fit as a result.
