h.sapiens and neandertal face to face.

scientific proof.

another boring knee update.

knee is allowing me to run.

sprinted twenty yards or so while kicking the ball around with my youngest.

another two weeks to go.

this is what blogging is all about. self indulgent rambling.

knee update for thursday....

a little sore this morning. in back of the inside of the knee. mcl soreness.

not a bad sign after running around a bit with my son yesterday.

didn`t push too hard and the knee held without too many dramas.

still, no soccer for me for a few more weeks.

and if you didn`t like the last one.....

my friend, marc stevens explaining how it`s impossible to get a fair trial in a traffic court....

...just in case you were wondering.

yep, that`s right, another knee update.

i ran up stairs.

without thinking about it for a moment i tore up a short flight of stairs this morning after putting the garbage out. i got to the top of the flight and realised what i`d just done.

good way to start the day.

now all i have to do is resist the urge to play this week-end and i`ll be just fine.

cynthia.

does anyone know a woman named cynthia, or cindy, or cindee....who isn`t a complete psycho?

i apologise to any cynthias reading this that aren`t spun completely about thier y axis...though i haven`t met one yet who wasn`t entirely hoot owl crazy....it doesn`t mean that there isn`t at least one girl, who, upon birth was christened as above.

and if anyone has noticed this trend themselves, could they offer some rhyme or reason as to why?

perfect.

and it`ll make refing women`s soccer that much easier.

your breaking news knee update for monday....

....two sets of power cleans with 165 pounds for 4 reps. admittedly girls weight, but the knee felt good under extreme duress.

still feeling the same pian going up stairs though....

knee update for sunday.

a week has gone by and yeaterday i got out on the field with my boys for a bit of a kick-about.

the knee held up for an hour or so of taking shots and passing and running about.

good news.

it was sore but managable last night and this morning i got through some light deadlifts, maxing out at 255 for 6 reps.

stairs a re still a challenge though, so i figure another two weeks of rest and progressive training before i risk a runout with the team.

dhmo concerns.

http://www.dhmo.org/

i never realised how dangerous this shit was until i checked out the site.

how come algore doesn`t talk about this?

Should I be concerned about Dihydrogen Monoxide?

Yes, you should be concerned about DHMO! Although the U.S. Government and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) do not classify Dihydrogen Monoxide as a toxic or carcinogenic substance (as it does with better known chemicals such as hydrochloric acid and benzene), DHMO is a constituent of many known toxic substances, diseases and disease-causing agents, environmental hazards and can even be lethal to humans in quantities as small as a thimbleful.

knee update, one week on.

yesterday i finally was able to go into a full squat and do 10 reps with just my body weight, with the help of a door handle for balance.

today i was able to do 205 for 4 deadlifts at the horizontal squat position which is as deep as i ever go when deadlifting.

it was extremely encouraging to be able to recruit quadracep muscles at the bottom position after only one week of injury to the knee, though i will know in a couple of hours how my body is going to react to the stress.

that`s what the ibuprophen is for.

andrew keen.

http://andrewkeen.typepad.com/the_great_seduction/2006/10/my_book_now_not.html

apparently this guy thinks we are fucking up culture by blogging.

his view is that we gain unwarranted exposure by publishing anything we feel like, without expertise or credentials to justify our position.

he hasn`t been watching tv, or following politics obviously, where everyone and thier little dog is entertainment.

and andrew?, just in case you are reading this, culture was fucked long before we began typing.

and i take exception to his position regarding amateurism. as a musician i don`t read a note, but i have been immersed in the culture and performance of music all my life...having two parents who were accomplished pianists and singers. i have been playing guitar for 35 years, and while i have never taken formal lessons and don`t seek accolades for my performances, i can more than play.

his position that amateurs posting on youtube and the like are somehow diminishing the high position of art and music, along with litarature, science, art and everything else in the realm of human expression.

does he think freud or einstien or beethoven wouldn`t post on youtube?

he is what could be characterised as a snob. an elitist. a citizen of a bygone era when only the top 1% got a go on the stage...and i hazzard to guess that he wasn`t one of them.

blogging, and bloggers are the new culture...along with everyone else who has a voice and wishes to be heard.

expert or not.

oh shit....

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090724/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_obama_harvard_scholar

...what a dumbass.

doesn`t he have advisors who follow him around in the hopes of avoiding shit like this, or was it deliberate?

a question.

if you pull into a parking spot only to notice that the spot is marked disabled, with a sign that has a concrete stand, what do you do?

a) find another spot to park.

b) move the sign to another open spot.

and if you chose b, are you still parked in a disabled spot?

i realise that`s actually two questions, but i think you can deal with it.

knee update, mcl tear.

finally, after nearly a week, the mcl (medial collateral ligament.) is exhibiting signs of damage.

i was carrying paint cans in the hardware store and stepped wrong over a low display, forcing pressure onto my right leg. when i got home i could feel the strain through the inside of the right knee where the mcl lies.

this is ggod and bad news.

good in that now i know how to treat the injury and what to expect.

bad in that it may take as long as eight weeks to fully recover, with the knowledge that the right knee is susceptable to re-injury as the left one has been most of my life.

defenders get a break for while.....

a visit to the chiropractor.

gets a blank look.

i dunno, he said.

go get some x-rays, he said.

oh well... slightly better than visiting a medical doctor, as he actually released the kneecap somewhat, and while that gave me a minor headache for a bit, it gave me further encouragement in that he didn`t find that the knee was unduly damaged.

and the knee hasn`t got worse....

it doesn`t suprise me at all.

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/afp/090721/usa/us_politics_obama

i saw a lady in waterdown recently with an obama tee-shirt which, ohter than having a big picture of his face, said in big letters "finally, progress".

ok, so firstly. we are in canada. he isn`t the president of this country....and secondly, progress?

she was a black woman, so i can only assume that she was saying that she felt that a black man in the white house was progress for her.

obama has a tough job to do. like clinton, who took over from a bush, obama has to deal with military and foriegn policy issues that are outside of his mandate(those who voted for both obamaa and clinton vehemently opposed war.) at a time when economy was behaving like a pretty prom date that got drunk way too fast...

...so it`s not suprising that those who voted for him are pissed. he`s spending money like a rapper on crack and futher fucking foriegn policy up much like billy-bob clinton.

get a saxophone obama, chicks dig it.

says it all.

and i`m sick and tired of people saying guns kill people.

people kill people....and mostly without guns.

knives, panty-hose, hammers, cars, bats, sticks, chains, bare hands.....and occasionally, a gun.

the common element in all of this is that each weapon was wielded by a....person.

a handgun is a great way to stop people coming at you with one of the above-mentioned weapons.....and peolpe are less likely to butt in on you if you are displaying a pearl handle also.

and i`m big on politeness.

people are really polite if they know you are able to open fire.

knee, day 5.

still not supporting my weight and sharply painful under load, but i went for a brief bike-ride this morning up a moderate hill and the knee, though uncomfortable allowed me to complete the journey and so i will put this one in the victory column.

the knee is sore now though i`m confident that the healing process is underway.

Monday, July 20, 2009

knee update.

well, three days since i tweaked the knee and not much has changed.

went for a long walk yesterday and the knee was solid, except for climbing stairs, where i experienced intermitant pain as i climbed.

this week will be one of waiting for the climbing pain to dissipate so that i can begin to directly work the leg muscles again.

in the meantime i will do the stiff-legged deadlifts and ride the bike moderately.

i have seen no diminishing of the muscle around the knee which is usually indicative of more serious damage to the ligaments of the knee and i`ve been able to walk on the flat without discomfort at all and ride the bike with only minor discomfort.

all going well i should be on the pitch again in a month.

fingers crossed.

this struck me as being funny.....

obama, you are a dick.

knee injury.

a serious knee injury to my left knee when i was 19 ended my dream of playing professional football (soccer), and kept me off the field entirely until i was 36 years old.

i started playing again after a knee surgery gave some stability to the knee and allowed me to run...for awhile.

three surgeries later and years of weight training and several increasingly more expensive knee braces, i finally threw off the bonds and played brace free last year for the first time since i was a boy.

the dream was realised. i had said that i wanted to achieve that before i turned fifty, and i was two years early.

yesterday i was taken right back to square one.

ironically, not with the left knee, but with the right.

i turned to chase a ball and beat a defender who had come too close, and as i turned he lunged, catching my right foot as he did so and tripped me. as his foot caught mine my right knee twisted ever so slightly and as i fell i knew something was wrong.

i got off and could walk without pain and tried running on the sideline as the game proceeded with the intention of returning in a few minutes.

as i stayed warm running on the sideline i realised that the knee wouldn`t hold my weight as i squatted down to parallel. my game was over....

....this morning i got up pain free except when i tried to climb stairs.

the leg wouldn`t carry me.

i tried some stiff-legged dead lifts up to 225 for four reps without pain in the joint, but as i tried to descend into more of a squat i could feel the sensitivity above the knee.

thankfully the cartilage seems to be intact, but the ligaments above the inside of the knee are strained significantly.

i rode my bike a little later and felt some discomfort as i pushed down with the right leg, but again, the joint seems stable and the damage seems to be in the soft tissue.

good news.

four to six weeks of progressive weight training and bike riding and i should be good to go.

nasa

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090716/ap_on_sc/us_sci_moon_video

what does nasa stand for?

never a straight answer.

i remember sitting in a classroom in england, as a child, on the floor looking up at one of those tvs on a giant wheeled stand with everyone else...teachers and kids alike...not speaking....just sitting and watching...in awe of the magical event unfolding in front of us.

now i`m not in awe so much as re-visiting all the ideas of people who questioned whether we actually put men on the moon.

some powerful arguements out there for those who are curious.

i`m not going to post links because those curious can do simple google searches and see the arguements for themselves.

part of the arguement suggests that the moon landings were filmed in a studio on earth.

this latest nasa revelation does nothing to convince me they did actually land men on the moon back in 1969.

tampering with evidence?

oops.

hey al.....

....you are part of the problem, my niggah.

obama`s faulty history lesson.

http://africanhistory.about.com/library/weekly/aa101101a.htm

obama is in ghana giving speeches at the slave buildings built by the british in the 17th century this week, giving us all the impression that his wife`s family were victims of the british.

while this is substantially true, what obama and an entire nation of people fail to address is that long before the european colonisation of africa, the muslims had been trading in slaves for centuries...and while this does nothing to exhonorate white slavers, to ignore this fact allows obama`s sharp point towards white america as the problem that blacks in america suffer today.

obama needs to tell the whole truth, so that whites and blacks...and those inbetween....can resolve the who-did-what-to-whom shit once and for all.

elvis costello.....

....is crap.

i went to starbucks this morning for my usual and was assualted about the ears with what i can only describe as a middle-aged man whining into a microphone while struggling to find a discernable melody.

for some reason starbucks features this asshole and plays his latest attack on the ears relentlessly.

actually starbucks does a number of things that i find annoying, many of which have to do with promoting cheap labour in foriegn countries and selling over-priced water to raise money for third world developement.

until they have enough of a population to start another war.

i`m glad that starbucks has good coffee though. i would hate to think i would have to go to tim hortons.

for a long time now the feminists have been saying that they don`t need a man....especially now that we officially don`t do housework and change diapers.....so i would well imagine that long before the new lab-made sperm is used for the benifit of infertile men, it will be applied to forging ahead wth the new species of amazons.

it begs the question though, what happens to the male children?

but it should be interesting, as a side note to future history, when the arguements start between two career-minded lesbians siring a child without a man......who are they going to blame on the housework not being done when they get home from the gym, work, coffee with friends?

the paradox of choice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VO6XEQIsCoM

or, why on-line dating hurts relationships.

for those of you that won`t watch the video, though i highly recommmend it, the reason why on-line dating hurts relationships is that there is too much choice.

men and women go on-line and scan scores of faces and profiles and as they whittle thier picks down and actually choose people to communicate with...there is this nagging doubt that they could have chosen the other guy, or that there maybe was a better looking one somewhere else.....even though they date and see the person and possibly marry.

and the feeling persists.

and many who find themselves in relationships from the internet, will take a look at what they missed, now and then.

religion vs. science.
