father`s day.

well, all week the newspapers have been full of ads for father`s day specials on everything from lawnmowers to mp3 players........motivating children and spouses to honour thier dads and husbands for thier genetic contribution.

.........................which is all well and good, because this is how modern society recognises it`s self.

via consumer products.

and if people buy things then we will have an economy.

the anarchists say that it`s high time the whole game stops and we return to a "simpler" way of life, but i disagree.

we do seem somehow happier and less agressive when we have new things on a steady basis.

the human brain washes it`s self with endorphins when it shops.

endorphins are chemicals that emulate morphine.

endorphine production is known as the natural high......

like exercise or sex or hunting or the first breath of mountain air as you climb

but i realised that the greatest gift a father can recieve on a day specifically named in his honour is to be with his children.

and today i have that.

That is because you/they are sick, sick, sick. I shop for very little. And making rich people richer because of your shopping isn't helping you at all, that is just something they have brainwashed you into believing.

Happiness is having only what you need and not having to work yourself to death to get more, that and good friends and time with nature.

I once had it all and none of it made me happy because it owned me. I'm happier not shooting for it.

I got no gifts today other than Helen treated me to breakfast downtown. Cool, I didn't get more crap because I already have too much crap.

I got some hugs, that's all I care about. Hugs.

i went to see a play with my children for father`s day.

it cost money, but it was the time spent with my children that was the important thing.

we went to see a production called "we will rock you" a play based on the music of queen.

it was performed at the canon theater in toronto and the tickets were a gift from a friend.

our costs were gas, parking and food.

consumerism can be seen as a sickness. you have a valid point.

but there are so many good things that have come out of our society that it far outweighs and of the negatives.

never in recorded history have we had such a rich culture of art, science and technology, and with it the true nature of good will comes through.

never before have so many people been able to genuinely help eachother.....

....even in simple ways.......

like discussing things on blogs.

and the rich get richer whether you or i spend another dime.
