the seven deadly sins.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_deadly_sins

which is your favourite?

Lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, vengeance, envy and pride.

well, let`s go through them and see.

gluttony? no. i`m not into food and drink that much and monopolising the conversation was never my thing either.

sloth? no. i can`t sit still long enough to read my e-mails, never mind lolling about eating crap and watching oprah for hours.

envy? of what?

greed? there`s plenty for everyone, just relax.

pride? well i could see why some wouldn`t be.

vengeance? there are those who are begging..........

and finally, lust. oh yeah. who doesn`t lust for life, that sweet embrace......that intense drive to live and know the fine line between love and hate.

the look in her eye.

to be passionate.

but then again, each of the sins mentioned above have their purpose, and to make them somehow wrong as rules to live by would make one a spineless jellyfish.......

we need to rest some days because we run, we work out, we play our sport with intensity, we get up early and work and we think a lot. so taking a day off occasionally is part of the plan.

we need to over-eat and dring excessively and talk out our arses now and then. it`s called a celebration.

we need to covet, otherwise we would be motivated to do more.

and we need to be greedy to take more than we need to put something away for that rainy day.

we are sinners.

fuck `em.

Lust is my personal number 1. I really don't think any of these are sinful in most regards provided you use them in moderation and to motivate yourself to do something positive. I'm with you on this one.

well yes, i agree ricardo. we are engineered for lust. it is in our dna.

replicate or die.

and it feels good too.

Yes it does!

the seven deadly sins tend to cover pretty much the range of human emotionality.

to make emotions illegal, or immoral, make us into robots, or at the very least neurotic.

Lust.

We arrive with two instructions.

Survive, procreate (have sex)

We are over procreating so we need to back off from that and just enjoy the sex, but all that other shit gets in the way.

Whats interesting is that the buddhist tradition has its own "poisons of the soul" numbering 6, and match quite nicely with the european.

Delusion replaces pride, and lust is simply desire. Gluttony is lacking, but easily falls into the desire catagory.

vengence is more appropriately termed "anger" in both.

Really they are best understood as being mindless, unbalanced, persitant addictions, not just surpressed natural emotions.

These sins control the person, and not the other way around, as you might suggest. Seen in this way, the poisons to the individual and society are obvious, and should be given more serious consideration.

Moderation is the key. That said occasional moderate excess is warranted, IMHO.
