the vertical strings are called frets. the last guitar neck is fretless for playing a fretless style which, while mostly used on the bass guitar, is used on the six string models occasionally. you can slide your fingers more freely without frets and it produces a sort of trombone or violin effect.
those strings are wound tight around the tuning pegs at the end of the neck and are secured onto the body of the guitar at the other end. they are very sharp and it takes a while to get used to the feeling of them under your fingers. it feelis magnificent to stand with a guitar and play. and peaceful and enlightening and a million other emotions too.
